GIVING
EdiTors 4 Development
A Facebook group I started on 1st November, 2009. Join us!
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=182360112400
Its aim
is to bring together two groups of people:
- editors who have time and skills to share, either paid or
as volunteers
and
- people in non-profit organizations (like community organizations)
who need help to edit documents - grant applications,
reports, press releases, reports, whatever.
Anyone who can promote connections or has tools and best practices
to contribute is welcome.
My small email survey showed there's a need, and interest.
Some comments I received:
Jenny, South Africa:
"... think it is a good idea. I personally have been thinking
of volunteering my services to NPOs (especially environmental)
for some time but cannot offer that service while I am working....(no
free time).
I am sure there would be editors around the world willing
to provide such a service. While some of them would need payment
for their services, I imagine that there should be plenty that
can provide the service as volunteers."
Willlem, South Africa:
"Your idea is somewhat idealistic but
is good and has a lot of merit.
No reason why it shouldn't work. Will take a lot
of drive and promotion to get it off the ground, but once
going, will pick up momentum and run by itself."
Lindy, New Zealand:
"I'd say yes, having worked for and been a member of community
groups and initiatives.....in applications
for funding, very
often you need a good handle on the context of both applicants
and funders, of what's available, what they're looking for
and how best to frame the application to meet this. It may
require
some familiarity with both sides to hit the right register
and to highlight the right things.
In terms of just plain writing
skills - yes that could be useful. It would certainly enhance
communication between these parties."
Adam, New Zealand / Canada:
"The idea you suggest is a very timely one. I have had a spike
in interest of late, from several editor types and media persons
looking to bite into something meaningful. Finding these partnerships
is truly valuable, as the resources of non-profits are always
stretched thin and especially of late because of the economic
downturn. I think this idea is a fantastic one, and the "need" does
in fact exist."
